How to setup Windows 98 Dial-Up networking for Internet Chicago.

1. Set up Windows 98 networking

• Go to control panel from My Computer (on the desktop) and double click on network.
• Where it says "The following network components are installed" make sure the following are listed: Client for Microsoft Networks Dial Up Adapter TCP/IP

• To install the Client for Microsoft networks, click on add. Then Client. Then Add again. And then move down to Microsoft on the left hand side and choose Client for Microsoft networks on the right. Click ok.
• To install Dial Up Adapter, click on Add, then choose adapter and click add. Then go down to Microsoft on the left side and select dial up adapter on the right. Click OK.
• To install TCP/IP click on Add then choose protocol then click add again. Then choose Microsoft on the left side and then select TCP/IP on the right. Click OK.
• Then click OK again and your computer will copy files and ask you to restart. Do so.

2. Set up dialup networking

• Open up my computer on your desktop then the Dial-Up Networking folder. Double click add new connection. Name it Internet Chicago and make sure the proper modem is selected. Click Next.
• Type in the proper telephone number from our POP number page.

Note for users with call waiting: If you have this service you may want to disable it while you are online. An incoming call may disconnect you from Internet Chicago . Call waiting can usually be turned off for the duration of a call by adding "*70," to the beginning of a phone number, i.e. *70,895-7759

Click Next. Make sure you typed in the proper name and click Finish. Use the back button to correct any mistakes.

• In the Dial-Up Networking folder choose Connection from the menu, then Settings. Make sure "Prompt for information before dialing is checked". Leave this feature on till you have entered in your user name and password correctly, AND have saved it, and get connected. Then you may turn it off if you wish.
• Right click on the Internet Chicago connection you just made and choose properties. Click on the Server Types tab. Have only Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP (under allowed network protocols) check. Click on TCP/IP settings.

• Make sure that "server assigned IP address" and "server assigned Name Server Addresses" are set. Leave IP header compression and default gateway checked. Click OK. Click OK again.
• Now you are ready to dial in.
